Raised by George Wheeler of Warminster in Wiltshire, Cabbage ‘Wheelers Imperial’ has been well known for its superb reliability for over 100 years. This traditional heritage variety produces solidly pointed layers of dark green leaves which form compact, heart shaped heads. Although a Victorian variety, it remains one of the best varieties for autumn sowing to stand the winter.

Cabbage ‘Wheelers Imperial’ produces firm, well-flavoured, pointed, tender hearts for a spring harvest. 36 weeks to maturity it grows to a height of around 30cm (12in) and a spread of 40cm (16in).

    We happily accept returns within 14 days from date of delivery. All returns must be received in the same condition and packaging we sent them. Postage charges will not be refunded on unwanted products.

    You are solely responsible for ensuring the goods are returned to us. We will not be liable for returns that are lost in the post or lost for any other reason.     Sown in July to early September it can be cropped as ‘spring greens’ from February and as hearted cabbage in spring. Wheelers Imperial is also suitable for spring sowing for autumn harvesting. Sown in March to May it will be ready to harvest in autumn.

    Sowing: Sow successionally from July to September, nearly all brassicas should be planted in a seedbed or in modules under glass and then transferred. Seeds should be sown thinly, as this reduces the amount of future thinning necessary and potential risk from pests.

    Sow seeds 12mm (½in) deep and space 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) between rows. Once the seeds have germinated, thin the seedlings to 7.5cm (3in) between each plant. After germination, seedlings will often be ‘leggy’, so plant them as deep as possible to really anchor them into the soil.

    Cabbage seedlings are ready for transplanting when they are between 6 and 8cm high (2½ to 3in). Water the day before moving, and keep well-watered until established. Plant firmly, close together for small heads and wider apart for larger cabbages, around 30 to 45cm (12 to 18in) apart.

    To grow spring greens, plant out to 15cm (6in) apart and take alternative plants in March as spring greens leaving the others to fully mature fully.

    Growing; Clear away any yellow leaves. Feed the plants as they near maturity with a foliar feed.

    Water regularly, especially in dry periods. Hoe between plants as required.

    Harvest; April to May. Earliest heads can be cut, leaving the stump in the ground to produce a second crop of small leafy heads.
